You are right; there was a great deal of opposition in the North. That’s why the dictator Abe suspended habeas corpus, shut down hundreds of opposition newspapers, imprisoned tens of thousands of war opponents, censored the telegraph, intimidated federal judges, and deported a Democratic Party congressman.
