As semi-adjuncts of the state, the mainsteam media always downplay bad news for the feds. Take the nuclear sub which its officers ran into some underwater obstacle in the Pacific. The headlines never identified the nationality of the sub (showing it was a US boat). The stories downplayed any injuries to the sailors–we now know that one died and many others were severely injured–or damage to the sub itself, which we now know to be extensive.
