Progressive Puritans

Modern progressives are the puritans of our day. They believe in a secular religion, progressivism, that mandates obedience and conformity. This is no different than the 17th century Puritans who ran around banning books, plays, newspapers, dancing, or anything else that was fun, including Christmas. If you want to find the earliest evidence of cancel culture, you need to look to Massachusetts in the 17th century. Brion discusses the first book banning in American history and its impact on modern American culture in this episode of The Brion McClanahan Show.

Professor Clyde Wilson’s seminal online essay on cultural imperialism, “The Yankee Problem in America,” sets the scholarly tone for this idea. Here is an Amazon book list of select titles which further authoritatively explores this history.
