According to a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, “The Treasury Department and IRS sent almost 1.1 million coronavirus stimulus payments, totaling almost $1.4 billion, to dead people.” Turns out that “the IRS’s counsel determined that the IRS didn’t have the legal authority to deny payments for people who filed a tax return in 2019, even if they were now deceased.” That’s government for you.
