The great classical liberal political idea of secession is in the news again. As usual, anyone who believes in self-determination–and the US, EU, Canada, Brazil, Russia, China, and India are far too big, to take a few examples, for humane societies—is immediately smeared by all the usual suspects. Yet when the US government advocates secession—as of Kosovo or South Sudan—all these types are on board. Their god is the State, which determines right and wrong for them in everything.
