Terrible that Bill Owens, the Republican governor of Colorado, fired the University of Colorado president, Elizabeth Hoffman. (Voluntary resignation is the official story, but like almost all official stories, it’s a lie.) Dr. Hoffman was already in trouble because of a football recruiting scandal (coaches and boosters supplied top prospects with sex and alcohol; somehow they didn’t have to add the usual Cadillac Escalade) and the controversy over Professor Ward L. Churchill, the 9/11 theorist. But here is what got her canned: in a speech, she noted the “new McCarthyism” stalking the land.
