McCain the “Animal House” Candidate

McCain’s Johnny One Note campaign (“I support the troops!!) is as predictable as it is ridiculous. Last night, after Ron Paul explained once again how our meddling in other countries’ affairs leads to “blowback”, sometimes in the form of terrorism, McCain’s canned answer was: “We should support the troops, not criticize them.”

Of course, Ron Paul was criticizing the foreign policy decisions of the politicians in Washington, not “the troops.” He has more financial support from military people than the other candidates do precisely because his policy of national defense to defend America is why they volunteered for the military. They did not volunteer to be involved in “nation building for 100 years,” as McCain would have it. “Who are you?”, Ron Paul asked him to his face, to assign the next five generations of American youth to useless “nation building” in the Middle East? Good question, Ron.

McCain’s “I support the troops” mantra (as though anyone does not) reminds me of the statement by the frat brat in the movie “Animal House” when his fraternity was being prosecuted for violating college rules. Rather than addressing the issue at hand directly, he said something to the effect that since the fraternity system was an integral part of America, “I’m not going to sit here and listen to someone badmouth the United States of America!,” after which the entire bunch them marched out of the room humming the national anthem. This is essentially McCain’s tactic whenever anyone like Ron Paul questions the sanity of proposing to waste young American lives for a century or more.
