The oldest trick in the book for dictators and would-be dictators is to stir up fear among the public of some foreign bogey man who supposedly wants to kill us all. This tactic essentially defines the Bush administration. It also defines most of the lapdog media, which is all too happy to play the game in return for “access.” The latest example of this is a commercial advertising Katie Couric’s upcoming series of interviews with some of the presidential candidates. Katie’s mug fills up the entire screen as she asks: “What country scares you the most?”
