So, what should the U.S. do now that Kim Jong-il of North Korea is dead? Absolutely nothing, which is what should have been done all along. As Lew Rockwell recently wrote on this blog: “Ever since the Korean war, the US has used its military occupation of South Korea to prevent peace and trade negotiations from breaking out.”
North Korea has an economy 34 times smaller than South Korea, half the population, a per capita GDP that is fifteen times lower, food shortages, and a crumbling industrial capital stock. South Korea can handle North Korea on its own. Let’s bring home the thousands of U.S. troops that are still in South Korea.
Look for the U.S. state department and CIA to intervene and prolong the Korean division.
