Jorge Luis Borges the Anarchist

I’ve long been a fan of the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges, so, just for the record, my friend MK writes to point this out from a recently published collection of conversations. Borges says:

BORGES: Yes, at the moment I would define myself as an inoffensive anarchist, a man who seeks minimum government and a maximum of individuality. But that is not a political position of course.

FERRARI [the interviewer] Your independent attitude is perhaps related to your way of seeing the individual confronted by the State.

BORGES: Yes, of course, and now the State surrounds us everywhere, on both sides — the extreme right and the extreme left, both support and State and the State’s interference in every moment of our lives.
