The great scholar and academic publisher has died at the age of 82. The NY Times covers his life and career pretty well, and the handicaps he had to overcome, but I want to remember his great kindness to the Mises Institute. He published our Austrian journal, edited by Joseph Salerno, and such books as Democracy, the God That Failed, by Hans-Hermann Hoppes—not the sort of material that went over well in his intellectual circles. But that didn’t stop him; he appreciated high-quality work, and in all his dealings, was charming, funny, and learned. Once, he even got me out of a tight situation with another publisher who was not exactly his equal. On a visit to Auburn when he was in his 60s, he played a little basketball with members of the university team, and did OK. He was an amazing man. May he rest in peace. (Thanks to David Gordon)
