The president wants to raise CAFE standards and cut fuel consumption, but not for the biggest waster of fuel on the planet—the U.S. Dept.of Defense. According to Noah Shactman in an article in Foreign Policy, and as relayed by Nick Turse, “the U.S. military burns ’22 gallons of diesel [fuel] per soldier per day in Afghanistan, at a cost of more than $100,000 a person annually.’” If the president really wants to cut fuel consumption then we know what he should do: stop the wars and bring the troops home.
