How to destroy the economy and lose control of Congress

Yesterday’s Washington Times also features Irwin Stelzer of the Hudson Institute and the Weekly Standard offering some election year advice for the GOP. While Stelzer does advocate a reduction in the regressive payroll tax, he also suggests increasing the gas tax to “pay” for it. Of course, the gas tax also burdens working and middle class people, and Stelzer doesn’t even consider tying payroll tax reduction to reductions in government spending, which would allow the GOP to reclaim the banner of fiscal responsibility while championing tax cuts for workers. Stelzer thinks an increase in the gas tax would be good because it would discourage people from driving…I thought conservatives opposed social engineering through the tax code.

Stelzer also advocates the party of limited government push for enhanced enforcement of the anti-trust laws, thus punishing successful business, and destroying innovation and jobs. With friends like this, does the GOP need enemies?
