Those who know me are aware that, in matters of organized religions, I am an agnostic. At the same time, I believe that each of us has a need for “spiritual” experiences; a need to transcend our more limited nature and connect up with the rest of the universe. There is a limited expression of this need in our culture, but one of the best efforts is to be found in one of my favorite films, Ordet, a 1955 Danish movie directed by Carl Dreyer. I will say nothing more about it, for to do so would weaken its spiritual force. For anyone interested in seeing it, the film will be shown on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) this evening (Sun.) at 11:00 p.m. Pacific Time. Whatever your religious inclinations, it is worth staying up to watch, or to rent.
