I recently ran across a speech that Newt Gingrich gave at the Claremont Institute’s “Lincoln Day Symposium” in 1998 in which he said that to refrain from dropping bombs on Iraq “would be to betray the very cause of freedom that was at the heart of Lincoln.” By that time, the U.S. government’s bombing and trade embargo had caused the death of some 400,000 Iraqi civilians, according to the Associated Press.
