Gene McCarthy, RIP

Sen. Eugene McCarthy, the peace hero who stopped LBJ from winning renomination in 1968, has died at age 89. Instead of McCarthy, the Dems nominated the war-tainted Hubert Humphrey, who went on to lose to Richard Nixon. Nixon had claimed to have a “secret plan” for ending the war, then escalated. All told, the Johnson-Nixon war on Vietnam cost more than three million lives. I will always be proud of having volunteered for Gene McCarthy. He had a libertarian streak too, even outside of foreign policy. May he rest in peace.
