Governments have always thrived on the fear of the taxpayers, and the DHS secretary is sure that if we knew what he knew, we’d “never leave the house.” Fear, of course, is the stock and trade of the government bureaucrat who would have us believe that if it weren’t for him (or her) civilization would fall down around us. Whether we’re talking about terrorists, global warming, polluted drinking water, or your gun-owning neighbor — we’d all be dead if it weren’t for all the government agencies that “keep us safe.”
