When Everything Is Free, Then…

When everything is free, then……

My 11-year old son was talking to me about a sudden problem on Minecraft, that online building-block game now owned by Microsoft that has millions of young participants.

Turns out the administrator for a group of youngsters that participates in a Minecraft game along with my son suddenly found a setting was fouled and everything the kids in that group had made and were offering for sale was now free.

The administrator didn’t know of any way to shut that off.  Hearing this my son quickly boarded up his store so others couldn’t come in and take everything he had worked hard to make and was now free!

Which leads us all to an interesting conclusion, as my son concluded on his own.  In an era of government giveaways such as free cell phones, free rent, free food (food stamps), free health care (Medi-Caid), the economics lesson is this: when everything is free, the value of everything is zero
