Naive observers of politics like to think that foreign policy is based on rational assessments of threats from foreign states. In reality, our policy is a result of domestic interest groups, such as the military itself, seeking money and influence. What’s worse is the fact that the more Trump becomes isolated politically, the more he’s likely to try and shore up his base by pandering to the Pentagon and its friends.
