Democrats Will Impeach Trump

The House, with a Democratic majority, will impeach Trump.

As cynical as they are and as wary as they are about the effect on the next election, Democrats are convincing themselves that this is necessary to save the republic and the Constitution. They are taking impeachment seriously. They keep making statements about Trump that are committing them to impeachment. They are talking to one another in order to develop the mutual support for such a step. Their 2-year history of making extreme statements about Trump has taken its toll on their ability to see him objectively. They now cannot escape the chains of their own misguided thoughts and highly emotional feelings about him. They are trapped in their own cage of emotionally-held ideas about Trump and the only way to unlock the door is to impeach him. Only that will bring them relief. In other words, Democrats have dug themselves deeper and deeper into this particular cage of hatred and now they are going through a process of rationalizing their means of escape, which is to impeach Trump.

What’s going on now is an emotional process of fully convincing themselves and the voting public that this step is necessary and warranted. They want to shield themselves in the garb of having done an heroic thing to save the system and preserve it from the enemy of American government named Trump.

This prediction crystallized in my mind after reading this interview with Rep. Jamie Raskin.

Opening with these words “It’s the people’s and the Congress’s final instrument of self-defense against a president who is trampling the rule of law and assuming the powers of a king”, there is no way out for Raskin and like-thinking Democrats but to impeach Trump. How else can they live with themselves if they believe he is making himself an autocratic king? The rest of the interview in which he emphasizes going about the process in a deliberate and informed way is merely rationalization. His mind is already made up. He has no other real choice.
