Compelling “Compassion”

David S wrote his church when it required worshippers to diaper themselves:

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I have come to realize our fellowship at Xxxx must end after 12 years. During those twelve years we have been through a great deal. Multiple house church multiplications, friendships gained and lost, house churches falling apart, and even pastors fallen and restored. We have even remained “at” Xxxx through the unconscionable closure during the lockdown.  So, after all of that, what makes now the end? Mask mandates.

Now, I am not a “high-church” person theologically, but I do I have a Biblical understanding of what the church here on earth is supposed to be.  It is not supposed to be fearful, subservient to worldly powers, hidden or encompassed by a Zoom call. No, the church is to be Christ’s body working to bring the kingdom into this world. We are the front line of Christ’s efforts to set the world right.

Instead, we cowered in fear.  We submitted to the commands of Caesar. We forsook meeting together.  For heaven’s sake, we even closed for Easter!  Now we are being forced, against our conscience, to cover our faces during our Sunday gatherings. And for what? A manufactured crisis over a virus that is being shown repeatedly to be far less than what it has been sold to be.

Xxxx’s social media announcement that they would go along with the new mask diktat says, “We have made this decision out of care for our neighbor and respect for the governor’s request.” There is so much wrong in this one sentence, it’s hard to know where to even begin.

Let’s start with care of our neighbors.

  1. Just like forced wealth redistribution through welfare type programs isn’t “charity” because it’s forced, care/compassion for others isn’t either of those things if it is mandated

2. This presumes an overly narrow definition of what constitutes care for others.  We care deeply about others, which includes their right to exercise their freedoms of belief and conscience when it comes to medical matters such as mask wearing.

3. It is a twisting of scripture to pretend that forcing this behavior on the members of Xxxx as a condition to meet is “loving your neighbor.”

The letter continues with more insights along these lines. If you’re facing similar evil and need either verbal or written ammo to defend yourself and Christian liberty from aggressive Masked Morons, write me for Dave’s entire missive.
