New Jersey used to have the nation’s second-lowest gas tax, behind Alaska. That is, until Gov. Chris Christie, a former Republican presidential candidate, made a deal with the Democratic legislature to raise the state’s gas tax by 23 cents. The tax increase took effect today. New Jersey now has the nation’s sixth-highest gas tax.
