Candidates From Yore!

The goofier the offerings of presidential candidates, the more I long for the days when candidates for that office were presented to us as intended acts of humor: Pogo Possum, Pat Paulsen, Wavy Gravy, General Bullmoose, . . . even the perennial candidate, Harold Stassen. This was a time when the lines between reality and satire were recognized by intelligent minds but, alas, such days probably died, in the words of the great Tom Lehrer, “when the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Henry Kissinger.”
