I have been asked many times over the years about the Coast Guard. The question is usually something like: “I agree with you about the evils of the U.S. military, but what about joining the Coast Guard?” I have responded with different things, but I usually always mention how the Coast Guard fights the war on drugs–something that no libertarian should ever do for the government. Here is another reason to rule out the Coast Guard: It is deploying ships to the South China Sea! How in the world does that protect, guard, or defend American waterways and coasts?
