Brief Conversation with a Refugee from New York

On Saturday morning my wife and I were walking down a sidewalk into town to the local coffee shop when a car stopped and we could hear a woman in the car say to the driver, “Oh look, there’s people out walking without masks.  They’re probably going to breakfast!”  The tone of her voice was as though she had just spotted a mountain lion or a coyote or a unicorn in the neighborhood.

She said they had just moved from Long Island (the accent gave her away before she said that) and were looking for the local donut shop.  They just could not believe that we were permitted by the government around here to actually go for a walk without a mask and sit at a coffee shop around other human beings.  I think it convinced them that they made the right decision to flee New York.
