Beating the English

The first European settlers of the South were the Spanish, of course. They established St. Augustine in 1565, and now, it turns out, were in North Carolina too. Then there were the the French, who also beat the English to North America, settling Quebec in 1603. Correction: Brian Cruise writes to point out that while “Champlain explored the St. Lawrence area in 1603, he did not create Quebec until 1608.”
