Clay R. pointed me to the Wikipedia entry for Senator Barak Obama, which says that his mother was a descendant of Jefferson Davis, and was also part Cherokee. This could explain why the senator from Illinois expressed some skepticism about the Lincoln legend in the current issue of Time magazine. The Cherokees of North Carolina fought on the side of the Confederates against the Northern invaders, who they viewed as a common enemy.
