I’ve been around long enough to know I shouldn’t even bother trying to predict the outcome of this election. However, personal experience suggests that things aren’t looking great for Hillary, especially compared to her Democratic predecessors in recent cycles.
I live in a swing state, but because I am so very non-deplorable, I live in a city and Congressional district that are thoroughly Democratic-leaning. I live in a middle-income inner suburb that most modern denizens of the outer suburbs would call “urban” or “city living.” People’s lawns aren’t particularly well-manicured. In terms of demographics and politics, we’re not what Sarah Palin would consider to be “real America.”
Back in 2008 and 2012, the area was teeming with Obama bumper stickers and yard signs.
But, this year, I don’t think I’ve seen a single Hillary yard sign. I saw one Hillary bumper sticker the other day. I still see lots of fading Obama stickers from elections past.
In fact, to my amazement, I have seen two Trump yard signs in my neighborhood, and I’m shocked that anyone would dare display their Trump-leaning for anyone to see. That seems like an easy way to earn the scorn of one’s neighbors. Believe you me, there were no Romney signs around here in 2012.
But where are all the Hillary signs and bumper stickers? The lack of public enthusiasm doesn’t mean she’ll necessarily lose, of course. Maybe lots of voters will hold their noses and turn out on election day for her, or mail in their ballots with the Hillary box marked. Or, maybe not.
