Back in the USSR

Going to dinner at a prestigious hotel in downtown DC, I was stopped at the door by a security guard who would not let me in until I told him why I was there. However, I was not the only one stopped by security, in fact, the hotel entrance sported a large sign instructing guests not to enter until they had showed their room keys to security. This may seem odd, but I have seen such practices before….in 1986 when I toured the old Soviet Union. Of course, those hotels where run by the KGB.
