A Small Ray of Light

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey said an Israeli attack on Iran would “clearly delay but probably not destroy Iran’s nuclear programme.” More importantly, he added “I don’t want to be complicit if they [Israel] choose to do it.”

The word “complicit” has a negative connotation. In fact, it means “associated with or participating in a questionable act or a crime.” That’s the ray of light, be it ever so slight, because none of his other remarks suggested any change in U.S. policy toward Iran. He didn’t say that the U.S. would not follow Israel into such a war. I still say that in private, the U.S. should be laying it on the line with Israel not to attack and using every means at its disposal to prevent such an attack, including preventing their airplanes from flying over countries in between, withdrawing aid, etc.
