A Lesson in Projection

Republican Congressman Mark Foley, forced to resign over allegations of sexually explicit e-mail conversations with a sixteen-year-old page, had been Co-chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children Caucus, and author of the legislation dealing with Internet Crimes Against Children. For those who might have wondered what I mean when I speak of “psychological projection,” this is a perfect example: someone who uses the power of the state to punish others who are doing what the legislative advocate is doing, or fears what he/she might do.
