The Sad State Of Thyroid Care

Prologue to article SOLVING THE THYROID PUZZLE (Knowledge of Health):  the state of modern thyroid hormone therapy should be an embarrassment to modern medicine. Fraught with thyroid tablets that don’t dissolve, years of T-pills with variable potency and instability during storage, and a requirement that individuals with low thyroid levels (hypothyroid) take their daily tablet at least an hour before their morning meal, it is no wonder most hypothyroid patients’ thyroid levels are abnormal.

Add low stomach acid levels and consumption of alkaline foods (calcium) and drugs (antacids), and thyroid pills are poorly absorbed.  Nn Rx for thyroid medication becomes a waste of money.

To solve the absorption problem liquid soft-gel thyroid capsules were developed but cost 9 times more (from ~60-cents to $4.50 a day!) and the tablets appear to intentionally have a poor dissolution rate to get doctors to prescribe the more expensive liquid pill.  Price gouging to the max!

Thyroid testing is also abysmally confusing.  The thyroid gland makes T4 hormone from iodine that needs to be converted to the active hormone T3.  When there isn’t enough T4 the pituitary gland makes Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), which is the blood marker used to diagnose and prescribe more T4 (levothyroxine).  But a lot of patients with normal TSH still experience symptoms of hypothyroidism.  Hashimotou2019s Thyroi... Usually the problem is a shortage of T3, not T4, which is provided in desiccated (Armour) thyroid that modern medicine considers archaic and largely shuns.

The conversion of T4 to T3 is facilitated by two trace minerals, selenium and zinc, but doctors aren’t given to remedying anything that isn’t an Rx drug.  Almost half of hypothyroid patients are left undertreated and the other half over-treated.

Then there is piling on.  With T-levels out of whack, hypothyroid patients suffer with an array of skin, heart, gastric, eye, bone, muscle and mental problems.  It is common for a hypothyroid patient to visit an endocrinologist, cardiologist, orthopedist, allergist, gastroenterologist, ophthalmologist, and even a psychiatrist.  Why fix hypothyroidism, it is a boon to the business of medicine.

Finally, there is the revelation that 90% of hypothyroid patients have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune attack on the thyroid gland, for which next to nothing is done about and a prescription for T4 is expected to solve the problem.

Doctors are loathe to prescribe immune-suppressant drugs, steroids like prednisone, or in severe cases surgically cauterize (kill off) part of the thyroid gland.  So most patients just suffer.

The lack of zinc and selenium are at the root of autoimmunity, which the most adept endocrinologist appears to be mystified about.

Bottom line, if you are hypothyroid, fix the Hashimoto’s and your thyroid problems should be quelled.  Modern medicine need to come out of its own dark ages and stop treating every disease like it is a drug deficiency. And you may find, through further self-investigation, that part of your thyroid problem may be rooted in adrenal fatigue.  A licorice root extract may be in order.

If you are reading this report and you have unexplained, insidious irritating dry skin, agonizing thinning and loss of hair, worrisome fibrillation of the top (atrial) chambers of your heart, or an unexplained slow heart rate, or severe unremitting bloating, unremitting fatigue and sleeplessness, chronic constipation, loss of eyebrows (alopecia), elevated cholesterol (for which your doctor will inappropriately prescribe a statin drug), anxiety, slowness of speech, sensitivity to cold, weight gain, joint pain, muscle cramps, forgetfulness, muscle weakness, you may have joined the low thyroid club.  Worse yet, many of these same symptoms are associated with thyroid hormone replacement itself.
