During his four years as President, Abraham Lincoln addressed several issues. Among them were free trade, tariffs, and of course, secession, the nature of the Union, and slavery. Just as with the latter-day followers of Karl Marx, Lincoln apologists ignore what he actually said and offer us what they presume he “really” meant to say, but didn’t. Accordingly, due to the great mythology surrounding Lincoln’s words and deeds, it would be appropriate to quote him directly, to allow him to explain his motivations and thoughts for himself.
