There was a time when the group calling itself Young Americans for Freedom had some interest in promoting liberty. As its treatment of Rep. Ron Paul demonstrates (yes, nothing screams “Freedom” quite like purging dissidents and describing them as mentally ill), the YAF has simply become another militarist death cult. Voltaire’s famous gibe about the Holy Roman Empire could be usefully updated to apply to YAF: Its cadres are neither young, nor Americanist in their outlook, nor concerned about freedom.
Referring to this dying sect as “Young Americans for Fascism” may be appropriate, but a bit trite. How about calling it the “Neoconsomol” ?
