World Currency

Writes John Flanagan: “I’m reading Twain’s Innocents Abroad written in 1869. The trip cost $1250 (post-Lincoln’s War dollars). No CPI in those days, but the historical gold price renders the answer: today that same trip would cost approx. $39,000 (not yet post-Bush’s War dollars). Funds needed to enjoy various ports of call were quoted in ounces of gold. Evidently, at one time in America, there was acknowledgement of a one-world currency. No surprise; it was gold, and is gold.”
