Why We Fight

Saw the magnificent documentary Why We Fight this weekend at a local film festival. Director Eugene Jarecki was there to introduce the film and answer questions afterward. Our own Karen Kwiatkowski gets plenty of screen time and is, in many ways, the star of the show. Her line that she would never encourage her own children to join the US Armed Forces because the US military is not a force for good, but a tool of imperialism, brought a rousing cheer from the crowd. (Chalmers Johnson, who also figures prominently, has the funniest quip: “We know Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. We have the receipts.”)

No major revelations for regular readers of this space, but the dramatization has a powerful effect. The style is serious and understated, making the film much more persuasive than Michael Moore’s frequently silly Farenheight 911. And it’s great fun to be in a crowd of people booing and hissing whenever Richard Perle appears on screen.
