I sometimes get e-mails from people new to libertarianism or to LRC that don’t understand why I, and others, says things like Republicans are worse than Democrats. Let me give a simple example using the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
Democrats say that the federal government should fund the CPB and loot non-public-radio-listening taxpayers to do it. Republicans say that they oppose government funding of the CPB but have never done anything about it. When the Republicans controlled the House and Senate for six years under Clinton, why wasn’t there a bill on his desk every day to defund the CPB? (Was there even one?) But Clinton the Democrat wouldn’t sign it, you say. Okay, then why didn’t the Republican majority in Congress pass a bill to defund the CPB on the first day that Bush was the president in 2001 and give it to him to sign that evening? Answer: They were too busy plotting to expand Medicare.
