Why Listen to Barney Frank?

Since Rep. Barney Frank has emerged as the point man in this whole bailout business, it seems to me that Republicans actually can claim some of the mantle of 1994 and let Frank and the Democrats carry the water. After all, the Democrats control both the House and Senate and control all of the committees, so if they think this is so important, then let them pass it. They have the votes.

If the Republicans really wish to improve their electoral position in November, then perhaps they should let this newest nationalization of the financial system pass on a party-line vote.

“We need to get the president to get the Republican House in order,” Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor. “Without Republican cooperation, we cannot pass this bill.”

Schumer said Bush should also “respectfully tell Sen. McCain to get out of town. He is not helping, he is harming. Before Sen. McCain made his announcment, we were making progress.” Schumer was referring to McCain’s announcement earlier in the week that he was suspending his campaign to return to Washington for the negotiations on the financial industry crisis.

Would be that this was true, that John McCain really did ride to the rescue and save the country from this massive financial fraud. Unfortunately, I look for the Republicans to cave at the last hour and do Frank’s bidding. We can hope, but there only is one Ron Paul in Congress.
