Lew: The need the statists have for political direction in a time of crisis was reflected in the aftermath of a terrible storm that hit Colorado in 1965. At Robert LeFevre’s “Freedom School,” trees were blown down, blocking roads; rain and mud flooded offices; and students were temporarily without contact with the outside world. Oh my, what to do? Without anyone else’s superintendence, students and staff members began removing the fallen trees, shoveling mud and other debris from offices, and otherwise – and rather quickly – restoring order to the campus. In the meantime, in a nearby city that had suffered pretty much the same damage, the townfolk didn’t know what to do, and delayed taking any action. Why? The city manager was out of town and unavailable to give directions!
The sharp contrast between private and governmental responses to hurricane Katrina in New Orleans is also recalled.
