When They Were Called They Went

I have heard it said of veterans: sometimes they didn’t expect to go, but when they were called they went. Why is this seen as something noble? Suppose it was worded like this: sometimes they didn’t expect to go overseas and kill foreigners who were no threat to the United States, but when they were called they went and killed them anyway. See the difference?
