When People Gather, The State Is With Them

I never become tired of being sick and tired of folks singing odes to the state at sporting events. Tonight, prior to the BSC title game, there were not one but two chants, the second one of course being the SSB–you know, the one about the land of the free and the brave and other anachronistic inaccuracies. Sadly, by no means is this an American phenomenon only (though perhaps not many countries have jets flying over stadiums whenever the statist hosannas are enunciated by the unfree and unbrave). Before hockey games in Canada and fútbol in Peru, similar rites are observed. But why? I’d rather hear team fight songs instead.
