What a Surprise

The Bush regime, after bribing Ethiopia to invade Somalia, now seeks to reestablish direct control. Thus the “war on terror” continues to be just another name for neoimperialism and neocolonialism. (Thanks to Robert Grözinger.)

What a Surprise

The “regime libertarian” Norman refers to is — surprise — Cathy Young, who attacked me in Reason magazine for my views on the “Civil War” and World War II (views which, I need hardly point out, are quite well represented among libertarian thinkers).

Now we have the pleasure of watching her criticize “intelligent design” for being non-falsifiable. Oh, and Darwinian evolution is falsifiable? How, exactly? Karl Popper once noted that Darwinism was not falsifiable; I’d love to hear Miss Young’s reply. Naturally she doesn’t give one, since she seems unaware that her own criticism, even if true, would also apply to her own view. And she’s usually such a fair-minded person.

What a Surprise

I’m in Steubenville, Ohio, this weekend for a conference, and happened to see the front page of today’s paper. Apparently, Governor Bob Taft spent $139 million of taxpayer money on a reading program called OhioReads.

Well — to quote one of my favorite websites — put on your surprise face: it turns out, according to the paper, that no greater progress in reading has occurred in schools that received OhioReads money than in those that didn’t. I bet that means lots of heads will roll, the money will be returned to the taxpayers at the expense of the geniuses who concocted this boondoggle, and the state will be less liable in the future to blame educational underachievement on lack of funds.

Or maybe not.
