Voting. Or not.

Lew, I’ve long believed the antidote to the GOP’s presidential dictatorship is two whispered words — Hillary Clinton. However, that does not seem to faze most ardent supporters of the Bush regime. Perhaps they are confident that all elections from now on will be rigged in their favor. Not massively, because they don’t need and don’t want 99.9% of the votes. All they need is 50%+1. And then you govern like you have a serious and authentic mandate, without compromise or magnanimity.

But boy, will the Republicans squeal if a Democrat ever governs like that! I’d say it would be fun to watch, but sadly, it won’t be.

I have decided not to vote again ever in American elections — local or national — until we again cast paper ballots counted by hand. No punchards, no easily reporgrammed voting machines, just indelible ink and paper and a see-through ballot box. I know, there is some Phil Ochs-ish folk song saying just that (it was bumper music on Democracy Now! sometime last week), but heck, if the French can vote that way, then we can too.
