‘Vietnam Veteran’ as a Badge of Honor

I heard a news story recently about some guy running for office who lied about being a Vietnam veteran. I can’t seem to find it, but I do remember that Richard Blumenthal, the attorney general of Connecticut who ran for the Senate last year, was caught lying about his service in Vietnam.

My question is this: Why is it seen as a badge of honor to have participated in the killing of two million Vietnamese civilians?

Update: found the article here.
