US of NASCAR

Writes Jack Slater:

The pre-race ceremonies include the usual pomp and circumstance with military color guard and fighter jet flyover. Today at Bristol Motor Speedway includes the added bonus of Lee Greenwood singing ‘God Bless The USA’ along with a pledge of allegiance to the flag.

Also notable was the invocation, containing the words asking for ‘blessings on our troops who are spread all across the world bringing peace.’

This glorification of an empire of destruction and the interweaving of fervent religiosity boggles the mind.
