U.S. Restraining Netanyahu

I’ve earlier noted the trend within the Obama administration toward restraining Netanyahu’s bellicosity toward Iran. I’d add Hillary Clinton’s statement to that trend. I’d also add Biden’s speech in York, Pennsylvania in which he criticized Romney’s foreign policy positions on Iraq, Syria and Iran. This could be something more than positioning Obama politically as a “peace” candidate. There is also a report of a heated exchange in Israel between Netanyahu and the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Daniel B. Shapiro. An irate Netanyahu is quoted as saying “Instead of pressuring Iran effectively, Obama and his officials are pressuring us not to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.”

Pressuring Israel on Iran is, if it’s true, long overdue. I’ve been calling for this for at least 6 years and quite a lot lately. It could be a zig as in part of a zig-zag, rather than a real shift. I hope not.
