U.S. Attempts To Control Speech

Twice today I’ve been alerted to this article about State Department attempts to thwart speech and communication of information that is already available to the public. If you want to read the Wikileak cables, you can be reading them in a matter of less than one minute. Search on Google on Wikileaks mirror. Hit the first entry. It brings you to a list of mirror sites. I chose this one. It may not be there for long, and same with the others. Download any cables that may interest you.

The empire is under attack. Its financial and economic policies are failures. It’s responding with police state measures. It seems to me that it’s overreacting, which is a sign of the stress it’s under. Also a sign is its obstinacy, stupidity, and inflexibility in persisting with failed policies. And the beliefs and rhetoric of the ruling elite have hardened into dogmas that they can’t seem to shuck off.

The downfall dates from the ruinous Vietnam War. Things sort of went into abeyance for awhile, but then financial and other crises started erupting. When we have a string of fiascoes like no WMDs in Iraq (and the invasion itself), the Trade Towers blow to the mightiest empire, the failure of shock and awe, the torture, the Katrina mess up, the bailout of the financial institutions, and the scanning-groping foul-up, and there are others, the public starts to awaken to the fact that the empire has no clothes and the lying leaders have less sense than they do and have no intention of doing them any good.

These cables, so far at least and I admit I have not kept up or even read very many so this statement is preliminary, do not contain startling revelations that could not have been surmised or guessed at or even known by close followers of the various nations. Of course, more are to come. But they allow the general public to see what only experts may have seen before. This undermines the empire’s credibility. This is why the reaction is going toward suppression of information and why some of it has been so hot, angry, and even bloodthirsty. That and the fact that the empire now has a string of public relations disasters going and no successes.
