Tyrannus Rex

You might think even statists would sigh with relief now that Ed Koch, a gauche and embarrassing megalomaniac who tyrannized New York City for three mayoral terms, has died. Given to such threats as “You punch me, I punch back” and “”I’m not the type to get ulcers … I give them,” the boor personified Leviathan’s brutality and braggadocio.

But no. Instead they eulogize and flaunt a totalitarian infamous for ordering New Yorkers, “If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down” when the City’s water was in short supply. Better to dispense such tacky aphorisms than to abolish the inept bureaucracy supplying the water so that the private sector can take over and eliminate the dearth.

Koch’s equally crude colleagues are standing in line to crow about his decades of sponging off taxpayers. That alone tells you how dictatorial the sleaze was.

Look no further than Ed Koch for proof that the lowest of louts becomes top dog in politics.
