True Charity

Word has it that Obama delivered a personal letter from Senator Ted Kennedy to Pope Benedict during their meeting this afternoon in Rome.

This stirring news just might be a heartwarming sign of the maturing of faith, hope and charity in the heart of the senior senator from Massachusetts for which countless devout Irish Catholics have been quietly praying for years.

While Obama’s press secretary insists that no one but Kennedy and the pope are familiar with the contents of the letter, I am quite confident that it’s really no secret at all.

You see, the fortieth anniversary of the untimely death of Mary Jo Kopechne in a tragic 1969 automobile accident will be commemorated on July 18th.  In the true Catholic spirit, I am sure that the senator’s letter contained the simple request that the pope say a Mass — and possibly even more than one! — for the repose of the soul of this dearly departed friend of the extended Kennedy family.

We should add our prayers to Ted’s: May Mary Jo rest in peace.
