‘Thousands of Southern Women Were Raped’

By Lincoln’s army during the War to Prevent Southern Independence, says a recent article in the scholarly journal Daedalus by Chrystal Feimster, a history professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I wrote about this more than seven years ago in The Real Lincoln, as did Shelby Foote in his classic trilogy, The Civil War.  It’s a very ugly part of the history of the U.S. government, but it’s good to see that there are a few fearless truthseekers still left, such as the Daedalus author.

Here’s a little known fact about “Saint Abraham”:  When General Benjamin “Beast” Butler issued an order declaring all the women of New Orleans to be prostitutes because they refused to genuflect to his occupying soldiers on the streets, Lincoln refused to rescind the order despite international pressure to do so.  The order was a license to rape.

The Daedalus article is mentioned in today’s New York Times blog.  (Hat tip to Ralph Raico).
